
The Japanese equivalent for the western style - seating by the fireplace, in the winter - is probably Kotatsu.
A low wooden table with its own electric source of heat, covered with a thick blanket under the table-top.
Keeping your feet and lower abdomen under the blanket, while enjoying food / drinks on the table, is the perfect (and traditional) way of staying warm during the cold Japanese winter.
