It is quite common to wear 5 toe socks in Japan. Apparently they are very comfortable, but probably similar to many other Japanese things – food for example – it is an acquired taste. I have tried the 5 toe socks but couldn’t wear them for more then a few hours at the time as it feels ticklish. There are also 2 toe socks - which I believe have been around for long time – the Samurai wore them too. And there are socks specifically marked as L (left) and R (right). So far as my Japanese socks experience journey goes, I am at the 2 toe socks level and feeling great!
