The Voice Ad Network in the US

It seems the Voice Ad Network business is picking up in the US.

TechCrunch had an article today on the Voice Ad Network and a company called Jingle Networks. Jingle Networks provides a service called “1-800-Free-411”.

Here is how the “1-800-Free-411” service works:
Let’s say I want to find out the telephone number for a restaurant called the “Little Italy Pizza”.

1. The classic scenario would be:
- I dial 411 (telephone directory in North America).
- The voice prompt asks me the 3 questions:
- Am I looking for a residential or business phone number?
(I answer: Business)
- Which city?
(I answer: Richmond)
- What name?
(I answer: Little Italy Pizza)
- I am provided with the inquired phone number.
- The telephone company CHARGES me 50 CENTS (around 50 Yen) for this service.

2. The 1-800-Free-411 scenario would be:
- I dial 1-800-Free-411. (This being a 1-800 number, my call is FREE OF CHARGE).
- I am being served a 10 seconds VOICE AD on the phone.
- I am asked the same 3 questions as above.
- I am provided with the inquired phone number.
- The service is FREE - Doesn’t cost me anything.

It seems the “1-800-Free-411” service gets 20 million calls a month. Times 2 – this means 40 million VOICE ADS per month. Not bad at all.

Other areas of applications are call centers. I tell you, I’d rather listen to a couple of ads while on hold, than to the often dull and boring music in the background.

  1. When it comes to free directory assistance, you have LOTS of choices. They differ in some important ways, so try them all out and see which one(s) you prefer. You may want to try them all every so often just to see what's new! Grin!

I prefer the ones that have operators to help when the automation doesn't recognize me and that also don't restrict me to only business searches - sometimes I need to find people, too!

  2. “Pinetrees” Thank you for the impressive list indeed.
Unfortunately 1-800 numbers are not accessible from Japan.
I guess the takeout here would be the fact that the fee directory business model is picking-up in the US – with lots of choices available - and hopefully following in Japan soon.
