You have probably noticed the trend: (Except for big Enterprise solutions), THE SOFTWARE for the masses IS BECOMING FREE. The same goes for the hosting and other add-ons.
This works out great for individuals and small to midsize organizations. They can keep their cost low - the only thing they are asked for: their willingness to share the (anonymous) DATA with the software vendor, for benchmarking and other purposes.
Now, these millions and billions of little guys will eventually produce HUGE amounts of data and, off course, DATA is something that everyone wants – from governments trying to keep us safe and happy, to businesses trying to sell us stuff. And YES, they are willing to pay for it.
Some software companies understand that the business model is changing - the software itself is becoming only the tool for extracting the data – and the money will be in the data itself not in selling the tool.
If I was to make an analogy with the Oil business:
– The DATA is the crude oil.
– The software is the Pumpjack.
– The Data Warehouse is the Refinery.
As a secondary note, I see a big demand in the “Refinery” sector soon (i.e. Data Analysts, Data Warehouse / Mining specialists, etc.).
