Cook it yourself Okonomiyaki

Okonomiyaki – (incorrectly) also known as the “Japanese Pizza” – is specific to western Japan areas like Osaka and Hiroshima. There is one “cook it yourself” Okonomiyaki restaurant I like to go. There, you get all the ingredients in a bowl; you mix them and toss them on the very hot plate in the middle of the table. The common ingredients are: cabbage, green onions, eggs, shrimp, meats, octopus, special Okonomiyaki paste, etc. While cooking, you flip your Okonomiyaki from time to time so you don’t burn it and after it is ready you add some extra sauce, mayo, greens, dried fish flakes etc. You can it eat straight from the hot plate. It tastes the best accompanied by a very cold drink.

  1. I always thought it was called a "Japanese Pancake". There is a pretty good Okonomiyaki place is shibuya. Go left at the Starbucks and it is a few blocks in. I know such good directions, Greg could give you better ones if you still have his number.

  2. Did Greg take you to Shibuya for okonomiyaki? He should have taken you there for partying - that's what Shibuya is known for.
Let's all have okonomiyaki next time you are in Japan.
